Australia’s Under-16 Kids Banned from Facebook, Insta! PM Albanese Says No Social Media for You

Canberra: Australian PM Albanese has decided to ban social media platforms such as Facebook, X, TikTok and Instagram for children under 16 years of age. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that this bill will be introduced in Parliament next week.

Prime Minister Albanese said that this law is in the interest of parents for the online safety of children. He said, “I am also concerned about the online safety of children like parents. I want to send a message to all Australian families that the government is with them.” Albanese clarified that no punishment will be given for violating the ban. The responsibility of implementing this law will be given to the e-safety commissioner of Australia. This law will come into effect 12 months after its passage and will also be reviewed from time to time.

Why is social media dangerous for children?

Albanese expressed his concern, saying, “I don’t know what you think, but there are many things on my computer that I don’t want to see, so how dangerous can it be for a 14-year-old child.” He also said that the algorithms of these technology companies can turn children in an unsafe direction.

How will the ban be implemented?

The government has made it clear that this ban will only apply to new users and this ban will not be applied to children who are already on social media. Also, no exemption will be given on the basis of parental permission. It will be the responsibility of social media companies to take appropriate steps to stop underage users.

Expert opinion

Most experts believe that social media can have a negative impact on the mental health of adolescents. However, some experts believe that such a ban should promote digital literacy in children instead of using it properly.
